The Lurline Chamber Orchestra was established in 2009, by Maria & Angela Lindsay who are Co-Artistic Directors, as well as Orchestra Leader and Principal Viola respectively. The orchestra was founded based on their shared love of the rich beauty and versatility of the genre. They both received intensive chamber orchestra training as students and went on to perform as members of the Australian, Vienna and Adelaide Chamber Orchestras.
L.C.O. has held two very successful seasons in venues across Sydney in line with their philosophy of making quality music accessible to people of all ages in as many areas as possible.
Performing engagements outside their series include Bowral Autumn Music Festival, Kangaroo Valley Arts Festival, Music at the Gallery - National Gallery of Australia, Hunter Baillie Spring Festival of Music, Randwick Twilight Series and the International Space Time Concerto Competition in Newcastle. The orchestra has also collaborated with Sydney choirs Bel a Capella and Sutherland Shire Choir, as well as the Good Old Days Concerts at Sydney Town Hall.
Lurline was honoured to find great support and patronage in the late and legendary Tommy Tycho, who composed an exquisite Violin Concerto for Maria. The orchestra has performed this wonderful work many times. Celebrated musician and educator Richard Gill is also an honoured patron.
Angela and Maria's programming has won them much praise, not only for the artistic structure of each individual program, but also for allowing new music as well as older but lesser-known works to find their place amongst the established repertoire and to be enjoyed by all audiences.
In continuation of Maria's previous successful 6-year Blue Mountains Chamber Concert series, Lurline has held its own chamber concerts across Greater Sydney from mid-2012. These provide intimate yet exciting performances by smaller groups of L.C.O. players and guests. Performances have included the Lurline Quartet, baroque music with guests Kate Morgan, cello and Ray Harvey, harpsichord together with Lurline players and salon-style favourites with pianist Josephine Allan joining Maria on the violin.
